I was born and raised in Ambler, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. I grew up going by Ryan and decided to switch to Miles after I graduated (but not because I graduated) from Cornell University’s School of Industrial & Labor Relations with a Bachelor of Science. To my friends and baseball teammates, I went by Fish. After I earned a Master of Arts in Writing degree from Johns Hopkins University, I decided to go by all three.
In my free time, I play in an adult baseball league, coach ten-year-olds, officiate weddings on occasion, and also write music with my wife, Evelyn, in a band we call Borghese Sunrise.

And a note to my teachers …
Writing was never my first passion. My first passion, almost from birth, was playing baseball. But not all passions are innate. Some passions are slow cooked, and they cook and cook until they’re ready to be served. Of course, the ingredients that go into that passion are the most important part of the recipe. And there were a few specific teachers – one at every stage of my academic life – who played an essential role in developing the passion I now have for writing. Robin Farr at Hatboro-Horsham High School. Helena Maria Viramontes at Cornell University. Elly Williams at Johns Hopkins University. Without them, I wouldn’t have the passion (or ability) that I do for writing.
Of course, there’s one more woman who sparked my passion for writing: my mom. Over the years, she has read and re-read my work, given me edits and suggestions, and always encouraged me.
So I hope my writing is not only something that readers enjoy reading, but is also something that helps – in various ways – make the world a better place. And if it does, I think that would be a wonderful way to thank the teachers who helped nurture it.
